WILLMAR — Former Willmar Mayor Les Heitke is now running for the Willmar City Council in Ward 1.
Heitke filed to run for the seat currently being held by Kathy Schwantes, who announced she is not running for re-election.
If elected, this will be Heitke's second time serving on the City Council. According to West Central Tribune archives, he served on the council from 1989 to 1994 and then was elected mayor in 1995. He served as mayor until 2010.
Heitke is currently serving on the Kandiyohi County and City of Willmar Economic Development Commission's Joint Operations Board.
Ward 1 encompasses the norther quarter of Willmar, around the lakes and Ridgewater College.
