The election contest between Al Juhnke and Bonnie Wilhelm is a real study in contrasts.
Al Juhnke as our representative, completing his fifth term, has demonstrated real helpfulness to the individuals, businesses and local governments in this area. He has helped to resolve problems involving Willmar's new airport, to rid our area of the waste water, and to secure a decent transportation system for the delivery of goods, and people, within the area.
He has also worked with all with influence state-wide and at times nation-wide to bring about state and national policies to give us a better chance to have a say in the way things are handled in St. Paul and Washington, a very important duty when so much that affects our daily life is determined beyond our borders. Better programs for health care for all of our people, and a program of taxation that does not put a heavy burden on those who pay property taxes, need the voice and experience of a seasoned legislator, such as Al Juhnke.
Against this vast array of problems affecting the lives and fortunes of our people, what does Ms. Wilhelm offer as a solution? She has proposed two, one inane and the other inadequate. Early in her campaign she came out with the empty-headed proposal that a legislator should vote as Governor Pawlenty decided. We haven't heard that crazy notion for some time. Apparently she has heard our voters are not ready to vote for a candidate who states that all their concerns should be determined in the corner office of the state capitol.
She now comes forth with dreary monotony, "I will listen." Our people have long ago discovered that listening without combining it with meaningful effective action in all respects is moronic. Our people are just not ready to vote for one who does nothing but listen, especially the candidate who indicated that the one she would listen to is the governor.
