Letter: A true case of Minnesota Nice

Minnesotans have caught a lot of flak lately, and our "Minnesota Nice" nickname has taken a hit with the coming and going of the campaign season. However, I saw a glimmer of hope for us on Thursday night on the side of the road outside of Benson.

Minnesotans have caught a lot of flak lately, and our "Minnesota Nice" nickname has taken a hit with the coming and going of the campaign season. However, I saw a glimmer of hope for us on Thursday night on the side of the road outside of Benson.

You see, I am a college senior in the middle of student teaching at the Willmar Junior High School. Although I spend most of my days in the classroom, I still have evening classes on campus at the University of Minnesota Morris.

So on Thursday night, after finishing class around 6:30, I headed back to Willmar so I could teach the next day. Driving along, I thought of nothing else but the next day's lesson and taking off my shoes -- they pinched. It never fails though, when all you want to do is get home -- something happens. In my case I ended up hitting a deer.

As I had never hit anything before, I was extremely shook up. My car didn't run (although the deer did), and it was cold. But my "Minnesota Nice" angel showed up in the form of Terry Allen from Atwater. He not only pulled over and helped push my car to the side of the road, he also waited while I called for a tow. Letting me use his cell phone (mine had lost its signal), he patiently waited for almost 45 minutes while I made arrangements for my car. He even drove me all the way home to Willmar.

I was stranded, and Terry helped me out. His Minnesota Nice was exactly what I needed -- and I thank him.
