The Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City school was established a few years ago. Have you ever looked at all the fine trophies? They are just terrific. They have been won by the activities which are part of the students' education, both boys and girls.
At St. Olaf College a teacher took time off in class to tell the students that they got half of their education from books, and the other half from all of the other activities in the school. It is these activities which have a big part in helping a student become a better, well-rounded person. This happens not only in college but in grade school and high school. There is a time to both study and play.
To you people who intend to vote "no": What is the real reason for voting "no"? I get the feeling that if taxes are raised one dollar, your vote will be "no." So, you want to cut expenses. That is the real reason. Where do we start? Cut the classroom temps, cull all of the extracurricular activities like band, sports, choirs and such activities?
Back to the trophy wall. There are groups of names connected to all of those trophies. Suppose we didn't have a school, and they all went to larger schools. How many of those would not be on the team, because competition would be tougher? Some would not get into a band or choir or class play.
The largest expense in a school budget is the salary schedule. The way to correct that is in the process of hiring new teachers. As our most expensive teachers retire they will be replaced with younger teachers just out of college. They will bring down the cost of teachers. It will take time for this change to happen. So please change your "no" vote to "yes." The lower cost will come. Keep that trophy case growing with good local students growing in their personality, character, and general wellbeing.
