Citizens of the Willmar area, I sent the following letter to Willmar's mayor, Les Heitke. It involves my views on the proposed South Dakota Big Stone II power plant. After reading it, I hope everyone who cares for their kids and grandkids and for the living conditions of future generations will call or write Mayor Heitke. Ask him why Willmar had no vision and is willing to promote outdated coal technology.
If you feel the same as I and do nothing, you are as guilty as the people promoting Big Stone II.
Sir:
After attending Will Steger's global warming program at Ridgewater College, I felt I had to do something. This letter is directed to you and to anyone else having a stake in Willmar's decision to back South Dakota's Big Stone II power plant.
As you know, it will be coal-fired and will spew tons of oxides directly into Minnesota. We will also be given additional quantities of mercury, even while many Minnesota lakes and streams are presently polluted with this deadly element.

Big Stone II will not be a "clean" coal plant. Carbon will not be captured. Even if the plant will meet present federal emission standards, it means nothing as standards are weak and mercury isn't even regulated.
There are alternatives to coal generation. If Willmar residents had incentives to install high-efficiency lighting and appliances, the projected future energy needs would be greatly decreased. You are aware of wind power, as Willmar is planning a unit. You should have suggested that as the alternative plan for South Dakota. Instead, you have chosen, literally, a filthy, dangerous future for coming generations. How can you do this with a clear conscience?
