On Jan. 26, I attended another interesting, exciting meeting held by the Willmar Design Center concerning the redevelopment of the heart of our city, downtown Willmar. Twelve committee members were present, all volunteers, and experienced support personnel, who spent five hours together studying many issues.

It was like any other day in Willmar, where there are usually several such meetings dealing with improving the life of the citizens of Kandiyohi County. We can be proud of what all of these dedicated and hard-working volunteers are trying to accomplish for our community. Willmar and Kandiyohi County are like thousands of other areas in the United States facing the issues of the day.

By our actions we encourage others to be interested in where we live, telling them about the great people in our town, the variety of businesses large and small, our fine school system, and the dedicated women and men involved in social and protection services. Willmar is not perfect, nor is anyplace else on this earth. However, it is working hard to be the very best it can be.

Sometimes it is necessary to overlook criticism from others who say they love their hometown but do nothing to enrich it. Most organizations need positive, creative, caring volunteers to join them. If you think you are that kind of a person, please call the Willmar Area Chamber of Commerce (235-0300) for a list of all the county associations that would meet your interests.

And when you have done that, I say "welcome aboard" to the Willmar I know and love, which today (Jan.27) was referred to as "an awesome community" by Chris Jeffords in the West Central Tribune. Volunteers and city and county employees worked endless hours for Willmar to receive the All-America City award. It still is. And it will continue to be.
