Letter: Detert distorts Urdahl's record

I'm real disappointed to see that the Detert campaign has chosen to stoop to distortion and half-truth in their portrayal of Rep. Dean Urdahl's record.

I'm real disappointed to see that the Detert campaign has chosen to stoop to distortion and half-truth in their portrayal of Rep. Dean Urdahl's record.

In his top 10 reasons not to vote for Urdahl, Detert even had to make things up to get to 10. He accuses Urdahl of "allowing" the partial shutdown of government. I don't think the Speaker, Senate Majority Leader or Gov. Pawlenty asked Urdahl for permission.

Detert implies that Urdahl is against education and local government aid. But Urdahl voted against cuts in those areas and is endorsed by Education Minnesota. Urdahl's opponent claims that if the higher education bill passed, it might have led to higher tuition rate increases. The bill passed, Urdahl voted for it, and tuition increase rates lowered.

Yes, Urdahl voted against a billion dollar transportation deal. But Detert failed to mention that our representative did vote for a $2.5 billion bill.

Detert criticized Urdahl for not getting a dairy bill passed. First of all, in 2004, Urdahl did get a dairy bill through. Secondly, no one else in Minnesota has fought harder for the dairy industry. That's why Minnesota Milk had named him Legislator of the Year. Everyone in the Legislature knows that a powerful DFL senator blocked the bill and that Urdahl is a hero to the dairy industry.

Detert goes on like this. Please don't doctor the truth. It's proper to criticize an opponent's record, just don't make things up to suit your "list."
