Letter: Detert knows health care

Along the campaign trail, state Rep. Dean Urdahl tells us that health care costs remain a top priority for him. However, his record in the state Legislature indicates that he has supported cutting health care services for the poorest of Minnesotans.

Along the campaign trail, state Rep. Dean Urdahl tells us that health care costs remain a top priority for him. However, his record in the state Legislature indicates that he has supported cutting health care services for the poorest of Minnesotans.

Urdahl has supported the administration's budget in cutting health care services for approximately 40,000 Minnesotans by cutting them from the MinnesotaCare health insurance program designed for low-income working families. At the same time, Urdahl's party balanced the state budget by taxing nursing home residents.

We need a representative in the Minnesota Legislature that has both an understanding of the health care system and good business sense.

As a practicing family physician for the past 30 years, Dr. David Detert has seen on a daily basis what the effects of these cuts in health care services mean to Meeker County residents. Detert knows firsthand that these uninsured families will still get medical care somehow, most likely through the emergency room doors of our local hospitals, which will end up being more expensive for our health care system in the long run. He also knows that our elderly residing in nursing homes should not bear the responsibility for balancing the state budget.

I encourage you to join me in voting for a man of knowledge and understanding with respect to your health care concerns. We all deserve to be able to walk in the front door of the doctor's office and not merely the emergency room of our local hospital. Please vote for Dr. David Detert for representative for Minnesota House District 18B.
