Letter: Geese produce a lot of manure

As I look out over Foot Lake and enjoy the hundreds of ducks and geese again this fall, I think about the amount of manure they deposit in the lake each day.

As I look out over Foot Lake and enjoy the hundreds of ducks and geese again this fall, I think about the amount of manure they deposit in the lake each day.

According to the Midwest Plan Service Manual, one goose defecates two pounds per day. When talking to a Department of Natural Resources official last fall, he confirmed that number. He also stated that more than 3,000 geese were on Foot Lake some days last fall.

I'm sure if you look over Foot Lake today there are at least 2,000 geese. These geese are around until the lake freezes in mid- to late November.

Two thousand geese produce two tons of manure per day. That is 60 tons from now until the geese leave.

If a livestock farmer would have a manure spill of this magnitude, boy, would that be in the news.
