Letter: Giving thanks for gratitude

Your readers are probably aware of the Virtues program being taught in the Willmar Public Schools, but they may not realize how that program has helped the Blue Star Mothers support our troops.

Your readers are probably aware of the Virtues program being taught in the Willmar Public Schools, but they may not realize how that program has helped the Blue Star Mothers support our troops.

The virtue for November is gratitude so students are learning to be thankful for the people in their lives who had given so much. To show their gratitude, the students of Kennedy, Jefferson and Lincoln Elementary Schools have been collecting items for the Blue Star Mothers to send to our deployed troops. The response has been amazing!

We have 117 boxes packed to the brim with batteries, puzzle books, snacks, candy, and most importantly, notes, cards, and artwork from the students. One student gave his toy horse with a note wrapped around it. Another student gave his leather NFL football because he wanted the soldiers to have something to toss around during the time they aren't on duty. These are just a few of the treasures we found. Clearly, these students have given more than mere possessions.

We want to thank the students and their families for their generosity and the many touching notes and pictures they sent. From the thank-you notes we receive, we know our troops really enjoy getting mail and pictures they can share. They always comment on how much the support from the public means to them. Our teachers should be commended for the importance they have given the virtue of gratitude and the Blue Star Mothers appreciate their efforts.

Our Blue Star Mothers support group sends 35 to 40 boxes monthly to the troops on our list. If you have an address of a deployed sailor, airman, soldier, or marine, or if you wish to become a member please write to: Box 207, Pennock, MN 56279. If you wish to give notes or items to be sent to the troops you may drop them off at Schwegman's Cleaners. We also give thanks to the many who have been faithfully giving to the troops in this way. Please continue your efforts.

We all need to thank our brave heroes like these students have done so eloquently in their pictures, cards and letters.
