In recent years, social issues have been a hot button for the entire country. Abortion, stem cell research, and gay marriage have been the focus of so many campaign speeches in both national and local elections. I recently read about Michael Cruze's bid to take the Democratic nomination away from Sen. Dean Elton Johnson. Cruze seems to think that he can somehow solve these social issues. I truly hope that the people of Kandiyohi County can see the obvious drawbacks to nominating Cruze.
Politicians should be focusing on issues that we as taxpayers can actually see and experience results. Social issues are not something that can be "solved" or decided upon by the government. These issues are merely tools that politicians use to raise money. Rarely is there debate in Congress about social issues except in election years when politicians need to fundraise. There will always be someone to disagree with you, no matter what opinion you hold, on what is right or wrong with any of the above mentioned social issues. Instead of a politician telling me what is morally right, I would rather decide something that important for myself.
I would rather have a politician solve the methamphetamine epidemic plaguing the county I grew up in. I would like to have well-funded schools and education programs so that Willmar High School, the high school I graduated from, can be mentioned with pride and is the envy of schools around the state. I believe a politician should want to focus his energy on the people in Kandiyohi County, the county where both my parents and grandparents live, having available health care and being able to find a good paying job.
I hope that the people of Kandiyohi County realize that Cruze is not the man to do that. If Cruze is the Democrat that he says he is, he will withdrawal his candidacy immediately and cast his support for Johnson.
