Four years ago, due to redistricting, the city of Montevideo became part of Minnesota's Seventh District. I met Congressman Collin Peterson years earlier, when we went to Washington, D.C., looking for help for our flooded community. Peterson helped us then, and we were thrilled to have him represent us in the U.S. Congress. Since that time, Peterson has spent a lot of time in our community, and has been very responsive to our needs.
Lately I've seen letters to the editor attacking Peterson's record that are false and negative, and certainly don't reflect the record of a congressman who has served our district well for 16 years. He's been attacked for not participating in debates, but just this past week Collin Peterson debated his opponent twice, at the Montevideo Chamber of Commerce candidate forum and at Prairie Public Television. His opponent also has tried to distort his position on immigration and homeland security.
When Peterson talks about his plans for the next farm bill, I believe he's going to do what's best for our district and rural America. When he says that he doesn't support amnesty for illegal aliens, I believe him. These people can try and distort his record, but I have a hard time believing that will stick. Collin Peterson is the kind of public servant that we can be proud of.
