Today, I read the Oct. 28 edition of the West Central Tribune.
My heart swelled with pride and tears came to my eyes.
There on the front page were three of "my kids." Harlan Madsen, Randy Frederickson and Dave Opsahl.
And in Madsen's words they are "there to serve people and make a difference!"
Pride? You bet!

Explanation: I was teacher, coach and principal in Atwater and Willmar for a combination of 36 years. I consider all of my former students "my kids."
I claim no credit for their success, but am very proud to say I was there and always interested in their growth and their contributions to the community and society in general.
Historically, Kandiyohi County has had some excellent school systems and the graduates of these schools provide the evidence. The three men I mentioned are excellent examples.
It is very natural for young people to leave home or the area after high school graduation. They may go for a job, further education, or the military. When they go through the exploring and tasting phase of life, they begin to think of more permanent settings.
I don't know if Kandiyohi County has a program to encourage local talent to return to live, serve, work and contribute to the area. If not, I think it would be a good project to consider.
Maybe Ken Warner and others at the Willmar Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce could take a look at that idea.
