I attended the Shelter House fundraiser April 18 and it was truly amazing how much of a turnout the fundraiser drew. There were law enforcement, judicial persons, social workers and everyday people who came in support of such a wonderful cause. I listened to a former speaker who had finally escaped the domestic abuse she and her child endured. She was probably one of the lucky ones who was able to have the support of the Shelter House.
I was one of those who said why doesn't the woman just leave; why does she continue to endure this type of abuse? I finally came to realize how victims of domestic abuse feel about what the future holds.
Women with no job, or no education, and no real support from family have it the worst. In some cases they have nowhere to turn. They find it hard to try and go out on their own, especially having to care for a child. So they feel they have to stick it out, hoping the relationship will get better.
Shelter House provides an outlet to domestic abuse, and gives women support and access to social workers and the support they need when they go through the legal system. A battered woman learns how to begin to feel better about herself, and learns what avenues are available to her so she can succeed.
Domestic abuse is a social disease that happens in all cultures, much like alcoholism which can also run hand in hand with domestic violence. Hats off to the good people of Willmar who show support for such a great cause and help to support the battered women of domestic and sexual abuse.
