Letter: The importance of families

Few, if any, matters carry greater significance than the moral issues we deal with. They are of great importance since they are foundational to all other matters that you and I encounter. One of those current issues is the family marriage amendment.

Few, if any, matters carry greater significance than the moral issues we deal with. They are of great importance since they are foundational to all other matters that you and I encounter. One of those current issues is the family marriage amendment.

We know from centuries of experience that children do best in homes where both a mother and father are present. While that is not always possible due to death and divorce, we must continually work at strengthening and encouraging marriage and family. Recent events around the country tell us that we cannot leave these issues in the hands of a few judges. Our state needs to pass the family marriage amendment to protect marriage as being between one man and one woman. Allowing those values to slip away will permit erosion of the very foundations of a well-ordered society. If we do nothing, the eventual cost will be great, not only in terms of quality of life, but ultimately also in economic and financial terms as well.

We must not allow our differences in these matters to become a barrier to helping those troubled by broken marriages, by broken homes, and by homosexuality. These people need our love. However, showing love in these situations is not accomplished by tolerating such distortion of the truth.

On the other hand, neither must we allow the act of reaching out and helping these people to become an excuse for neglecting to carry out our responsibilities in the political and legal arena. We need to move forward in providing sound public policy that allows and encourages good moral choices. Are you concerned about the society your children and future generations will grow up in? Contact your legislator today in support of the family marriage amendment!
