Letter: The importance of God's plan

Rev. Dan Croonquist's letter (Public Forum, Nov. 30,), "(Sen. Dean) Johnson is a courageous leader" made me realize how unimportant the marriage amendment is to some people.

What is more important than God's divine plan? When the state found out we had a budget surplus again, the statement was made that the legislators could change current law and spend it wherever they want. As a law professor stated, the marriage law we have now, "as well written as it is," is just a law or statute. That could be changed to include any other agenda or be amended, and our senator knows this.

The statement that it hasn't been challenged does not guarantee that sometime in the future it won't be -- as many states have already found out. There is nothing in our current marriage law about civil unions. Britain and Canada now accept civil unions equal to marriage with all the same benefits.

A George Barna resource group found that 49 percent of Protestant pastors reject core Biblical beliefs, and many who do believe in core Biblical beliefs are afraid to impart it to their congregations. I wonder, if Jesus Christ came back in bodily form and stood behind pulpits today, would he be as intolerant to our religious leaders and teachers as he was to the religious leaders of his time on earth? What reaction would the Apostle Paul get today from the churches, news media and politicians for what he wrote and spoke on earth such as Romans 1:18-32, I Corinthians 6:9-10? If he were a pastor in Canada he would be jailed and the church would lose its tax exemption.

I am grateful for pastors who stand up for righteousness and God's plan for us, and who have the spiritual wisdom and insight to see the breakdown of morals and values and how it will affect the next generations.

As for Johnson being a courageous leader, voting twice against and using his power to kill any chance to vote on a constitutional marriage amendment, even if the majority in his district support it, took a lot of courage.
