I'll say "Right on!" to Lavonne Halloran Reller for her Dec. 8 letter, critical of religion's opposition to the theory of evolution. Those who study the development of the species are just as religious as any of us. The more they study and wonder about it, the more they are convinced of the mysterious force (we call God) that has caused us to be so far advanced and less primitive than other life on earth. I'll never understand religion, preaching "follow God and discover the truth," instead of preaching "follow the truth and discover God."

Commenting on the statements Reller made about the poor, I'll say the present political situation today does not give the poor any voice in how the government fufills its responsibility to protect our country's less fortunate citizens.

The Republicans' survival-of-the-fittest ideology renders them impotent to address what they consider a natural phenomenon. The Democrats are the only hope the poor have. In this coming year, the Democrats should focus entirely on permanent solutions to the recent hurricane disaster and the crushing poverty that constantly plagues the lower class.

The Republicans' war in Iraq had become a secondary thing. The Democrats may as well wish them good luck in ending it and move on.
