Letter: The test of our abundance

I would like a response to this letter from Bush supporters. I've been trying to understand his actions as he claims to be a born-again Christian. Here's my problem.

I would like a response to this letter from Bush supporters. I've been trying to understand his actions as he claims to be a born-again Christian. Here's my problem.

Jesus said it was easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Jesus hung out with the poor and downtrodden and helped them.

Compare this to President George Bush, who has given the richest of our nation huge tax breaks and benefits in the past. According to the Nov. 18 West Central Tribune editorial, Bush's budget passed the Senate and called for $50 billion in cuts to low-income families. Some programs cut were Medicaid, food stamps and child support enforcement. No relaxing of tax breaks to the wealthy! Would Jesus reward the wealthy while punishing the poor? Now the House has just passed $95 billion in tax breaks to the wealthy while decreasing funding to No Child Left Behind by 4 percent.

Christians shouldn't bear false witness -- they shouldn't lie. Yet while Bush is praising our military, a good thing, his budget for the Veterans Administration calls for increasing costs and restricting veterans' access to benefits. This is from a man that won't account for about nine months' absence from his National Guard commitment. Christians are known for their acts and he doesn't pass the test.

Franklin D. Roosevelt, our World War II president, said it best: "The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little."
