Our country is in dire need of responsible leadership. I hope that when voters go to the polls they will not only look at the candidates but also the people who surround them. We did not vote for Karl Rove, Dick Cheney, or Donald Rumsfeld. Barack Obama may well be our first black president but he is not ready yet. His remark that Hillary Clinton's years in the White House as first lady do not count is very revealing. Before she was first lady she was also first lady of Arkansas, and she is also a lawyer and a state senator of New York, where she worked with Republicans on many issues.
Bill Clinton has been much recognized by the press but he is not the candidate. When he left office he turned over a balanced budget, a surplus, a two-year paydown on the deficit he inherited from the Reagan and Bush administrations, all of which disappeared when this president took office. Hundreds of our finest citizens have been sacrificed plus thousands with permanent damage in the war.
Our country's defenses have been diminished, our economy is failing, and we are trillions of dollars in debt to foreign countries, many of whom are still receiving aid from us. Our family life has suffered because in order for the middle class to give their children the education and lifestyle above poverty, both parents must work outside the home. It's time for a woman president. Even John Adams valued Abigail's impact.
