The flurry of political mail we receive at our home doesn't surprise me. I naturally expect both parties to try and sway the undecided voters. What does amaze me, a little, is the profound depth of deceit I am reading regarding Sen. Dean Johnson's position on "traditional marriage and family values."

Yes, it's true: he's a Lutheran minister. Yes, it's true: he's a chaplain in the National Guard. And yes, it's also true: in his office at the state Capitol, and through his influence as our senator there, he has -- more than any other single politician -- obstructed the passage of a marriage amendment to our constitution. But that's fine, too, if that's what he believes.

My only wish is that he and his supporters would be honest and straightforward about it. Don't say one thing and do another; stand by your position and defend it, if you can!

Let's have a healthy, honest debate in this country as to where we wish to go as a society. Let each side present their vision for the future as convincingly as possible, in an atmosphere of mutual respect and tolerance, and let the best ideas win. Let's not suppress free speech with hate mail, or with lawyers threatening lawsuits. Instead, let's trust providence to guide the will of the people, as we confirm among ourselves just what kind of a country we wish to leave for our children. Let the debates begin!
