An Oct. 24 letter by Jennifer Wagner questions my support for education. My commitment to it, from early childhood programs through post-secondary, is well documented on the floor of the House, in committee, in my caucus, and by education advocates.
The InterFaculty Organization, a group of college and university educators, supports my reelection. James McCormick, president of the state colleges and university system, wrote to me in August 2005, "You toiled and remained true to the expectations of Minnesota's citizens... The system leadership wishes to thank you for your commitment in making Minnesota the best it can be."
Education Minnesota PAC has endorsed each of my three candidacies for House Seat 18B. Within my caucus, I have the highest education rating and am one of just seven EM endorsees. "Your advocacy for public education is very much appreciated," EM President Judy Schaubach wrote to me this fall. "You have a true understanding of the challenges our public education system faces today. Your sincere desire to do what's best for public education and educators makes Education Minnesota's decision to support your reelection campaign an easy one."
The state's $4.3 billion deficit forced tough decisions when I took office.
Sharp tuition increases were an unfortunate outcome; now they're back in single digits. Yes, we can make college more affordable, and we shall, thanks to our state's strong economy and growing budget surplus.
