LITCHFIELD -- A 24-year-old Litchfield man was struck and killed by a eastbound Burlington Northern-Santa Fe train around 6 p.m. Tuesday along the tracks west of Litchfield.

According to Meeker County Sheriff Jeff Norlin, Keith Sully McKay was walking eastbound on the tracks and was struck by the train at the railroad crossing on County Road 1 on the west side of Litchfield.

McKay, formerly of Fairmont, was found dead at the scene. A witness, who was hunting nearby, reported seeing the man walking on the tracks. An investigation has determined the train was traveling at 44 miles per hour and sounded its whistle for a period of 47 seconds prior to the accident. A pair of headphones and a music listening device were found at the scene and may have been a factor in this accident.

Other assisting agencies were the Litchfield police, fire and rescue departments and the Gold Cross Ambulance.

The sheriff's office and the county coroner's office are investigating the accident.
