ATWATER -- Firefighters from the Atwater Fire Department were called back around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday to the Bushmills Ethanol plant and remained at the plant until about 2 a.m. after a fire in one of the large corn bins flared again.

According to Atwater Fire Chief Gerald Schwartz, firefighters used foam and less than 3,000 gallons of water to extinguish the fire that burned corn in one of the 750,000-bushel, 125-foot-tall grain bins at the plant.

The department was originally called to the plant around 6:25 p.m. Wednesday for a fire in an overhead belt conveyor, and that fire was extinguished, but pieces of the conveyor fell into the bin and ignited the corn, Schwartz said.

Normal plant processing was not interrupted by the fire.

The Atwater fire crew was assisted by firefighters from Grove City, Kandiyohi, Spicer and Willmar.
