SPICER — Vibrant hues of green and yellow leaves and grasses in the fall afternoon light set the scene around the historic pioneer cabin at Prairie Woods Environmental Learning Center on Thursday, as youngsters dressed in pioneer clothing frolicked around the lawn before story hour began.

Every few months, the center holds its popular Story Hour at the Pioneer Cabin, drawing children from around the region to sit inside the cozy cabin and listen to a children's book read aloud to them by Mari Klebe, who serves as the center's office manager and program leader for the pioneer cabin.

This week, Klebe read "The Deer in the Wood," a book by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Each event has children dress as a pioneer and listen to a story about the Ingalls family and learn more about pioneer life.

The next story hour event will take place Nov. 17 at 4 p.m. The event is for children in kindergarten through third grade.
