Spicer, Minnesota, voters elect new mayor and other municipal results from Kandiyohi County

WILLMAR — Spicer will have a new mayor next year for the first time since 2009.

Spicer City Council member Jesse Gislason received 310 votes, 57% of votes cast in the race, to become the city’s new mayor.

Incumbent Mayor Denny Baker received 230 votes, or 42%, according to unofficial 2022 election results reported by the Minnesota Secretary of State’s Office.

Baker was first elected in 2008, according to West Central Tribune archives.

New London also will have a new mayor. Current New London City Council member John Dahl was unopposed in his bid for mayor.

There will be a new mayor as well in Sunburg, where current council member Michael O’Leary was unopposed in his run.

Willmar voters elected Doug Reese as mayor.

Counting is complete in Minnesota, but totals are not official until canvassing boards meet.

Kandiyohi County Auditor/Treasurer Mark Thompson confirmed Wednesday that unofficial results in the City Council race in Spicer fall within the margin for a possible recount after canvassing is complete — a recount would occur only if a candidate formally requests it.

Unofficial results show that only four votes separate two of the three candidates for the two seats, which falls within the margin of less than 0.5% to be eligible for a publicly funded recount for local offices, according to the recount guide from the Minnesota Secretary of State's Office .

After the local canvassing board meets, a candidate has seven days to file a request for a recount.

The following are unofficial results from municipal elections in Kandiyohi County. Write-ins are not noted, as none of those totals affected outcomes:

Mayor: Incumbent Mark S. Olson was re-elected with 311 votes. Stephanie Haats received 112.

City Council (two seats): Anthony Holtz was elected with 238 votes, and incumbent Brian Carlson was re-elected with 200 votes. Incumbent Sandra Walsh received 172 votes, Jerry Dowdell received 73 votes, Jeff Dahl received 56 and Brandon Larsen received 53.

Mayor: Incumbent Douglas Hopp was unopposed and re-elected with 65 votes.

City Council (two seats): Incumbent Paulette Ascheman was re-elected with 68 votes, and incumbent Jim Wittman was re-elected with 59 votes.

Mayor: Incumbent Jonathan Lindstrand was unopposed and re-elected with 203 votes.

City Council (two seats): Incumbent Scott McGillivray was re-elected with 140 votes, and Jeff Clark was elected with 120 votes. James L Raddatz received 102 votes.

Mayor: Incumbent Wendy K. Lund was unopposed and re-elected with 69 votes.

City Council (two seats): Two people ran for two seats and were elected. Daniel Kiecker received 74 votes and Michael Sagness received 73 votes.

Mayor: John Dahl was unopposed and elected with 519 votes.

City Council (two seats): Heidi Manson was elected with 337 votes, and Tim Johnson was elected with 336 votes. Current council member Erik Hatlestad received 315 votes.

Mayor: Incumbent Kevin Crowley was unopposed and re-elected with 115 votes.

City Council (two seats): Incumbent Bruce Bastin was re-elected with 85 votes, and David Miller was also returned to the council with 82 votes. Jon M. Swanson received 74 votes.

Mayor: Incumbent Roger D. Ahrenholz was unopposed and re-elected with 296 votes.

City Council (two seats): Two incumbents ran for two seats and were elected. Greg Bonnema received 279 votes, and Mitchell Swart received 264 votes.

Mayor: Incumbent Ardell Tensen was re-elected with 285 votes.

City Council (two seats): Ed Zurn was elected with 211 votes, and Aaron Zenner was elected with 169 votes. Janice Piechowksi received 151 votes.

City Council (two seats): Two people ran for two seats and were elected. Incumbent Janet Fleck and Travis Johnson each received 19 votes.

Mayor: Jesse Gislason was elected with 310 votes. Denny Baker received 230 votes.

City Council (two seats): Incumbent Troy S. Block was re-elected with 331 votes. Incumbent Shelly Munyon was re-elected with 282 votes. Zachary Larson received 278 votes, which is within the margin that would allow the candidate to request a publicly funded recount after the canvassing board meets.

Mayor: Michael O’Leary was unopposed and elected with 52 votes.

City Council (two seats): Ronald Rosenboom was elected with 35 votes, and Isaac Rumsey was elected with 33 votes. Incumbent Milton Tollefson received 20 votes.

Mayor: Doug Reese was elected with 4,623 votes. Steve Peppin received 1,474 votes.

Council Ward 1: Carl Shuldes was unopposed and elected with 1,205 votes.

Council Ward 2: Incumbent Vicki Davis was unopposed and elected with 1,766 votes.

Council Ward 3: Incumbent Rick Fagerlie was unopposed and elected with 1,167 votes.

Council Ward 4: Incumbent Audrey Nelson was unopposed and elected with 1,056 votes.
