MADISON -- The revised $8.6 million expenditure budget adopted by the Lac qui Parle Valley School Board Wednesday night has a $600,000 deficit for the 2005-06 school year.
District officials are budgeting for general fund revenue of $8,031,247 and general fund expenditures of $8,672,953.
"It's an extremely deficit budget. We're budgeting (for) the worse case scenario. We do have some fund balance that we have to cover that shortfall as well,'' said Superintendent Bob Munsterman.
He described the problem as a one-year situation. The district's renewed operating levy will become effective for the 2006-07 year and will raise an estimated $1.2 million a year over the next five years. The amount raised is based on enrollment, said Munsterman.
In other business, the board approved the retirement of high school counselor Mike Bredeck after 33 years with the school. He will retire in mid-December.

Also, the board denied the leave of absence request from speech and language assistant Amanda Lowry, and approved the request from school nurse Sue Vonderharr for 2½ days of unpaid leave.
In other business, the board voted to schedule a mediation session with LqPV Education Minnesota for 9:30 a.m. on Dec. 28. The session may not be needed, however, because the board and the teachers are making progress in negotiating a new two-year contract, said Munsterman.
"It was more or less to reserve a date,'' he said. "It's very possible we could be done by that point.''
In other business, the board:
