Man trying to rescue his 6-year-old son drowns in west-central Minnesota's Bass Lake

A 45-year-old Kandiyohi man drowned in Bass Lake Tuesday night while attempting to rescue his 6-year-old son after the boy had fallen off of their pontoon, the Kandiyohi County Sheriff's Office said today. The drowning happened shortly after 7 p.m. Bass Lake is located about one-half mile northwest of Diamond Lake.

The sheriff's office said the 6-year-old boy made it to shore safely. Neither was wearing a lifejacket. Names are being withheld until family members are notified.
