WILLMAR -- Margaret Frances Schmidt, 84, of Willmar died Wednesday at Bethesda Heritage Center.

The service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Calvary Lutheran Church Chapel in Willmar. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Peterson Brothers Funeral Home and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Memorials are preferred to the Humane Society.

She was born June 17, 1921, in Pennock to Arthur and Anna (Nelson) Johnston. She attended local schools and graduated from Willmar High School in 1939. She moved to St. Paul and married Louis Covell, but divorced shortly thereafter.

She married Ervin Johnson. Ervin died and she moved to Wisconsin.

She married Edward Mady. They owned and operated a bowling alley and restaurant in Glenwood City. Edward died and she returned to Willmar in the 1980s.

She married Franklin Schmidt in 1987. She worked part-time as an aide for Divine House. She moved to Bethesda Heritage Center to recuperate from a broken hip.

She was active in the VFW and American Legion, was president of the Women's Auxiliary of the VFW and a member of Calvary Lutheran Church. She volunteered with the American Red Cross and transported donated blood to St. Paul. She was active in whist club for many years.

She is survived by her children: Carolyn (and Philip) Rivard of Canton, Ga., Paul (and Rickie) Covell of Clearfield, Utah; nine grandchildren; 22 great-grandchidlren; and two brothers: Donald Johnston of Willmar, and James (and Roberta) Johnston of Georgia.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, including her twin.
