WILLMAR -- Mary Ann Carlson, 65, of rural Willmar died Saturday at Rice Care Center in Willmar following a battle with cancer.

The service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar. Burial will be in Cloverleaf Memorial Park Cemetery in Willmar.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar and one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to Rice Hospice or Calvary Lutheran Church.

She was born April 23, 1940, in Willmar to Verna (Otterness) and Leonard Halvorson. She grew up in the Willmar community. She graduated from Willmar High School in 1958.

She married Gerald "Jerry" Carlson on April 11, 1964. They lived in Willmar. For the past 20 years they lived and farmed south of Willmar. She worked at the State Theater, the Third Street Café, John's Supper Club and the Willmar Public Schools as head cook/manager for 18 years.

She was a Sunday School, Bible School, and confirmation teacher and a member of the Ladies Aid and Altar Guild at Eagle Lake Lutheran Church. She later transferred her membership to Calvary Lutheran Church where she participated in the Steven Ministries, ELCW and Prayer Chain and was a trustee and church council member. She and her husband were also foster parents for more than 25 years.

She is survived by her husband; her children: Vickie (and Dale) Gast of New Prague, Tammy Shine of Burnsville, John (and Renee) Carlson of Benson, Jessica Carlson of Burnsville; 10 grandchildren; four sisters: Dory Doering (and special friend Jack Sandberg) of Renville, Elaine (and Richard) Isaacson of Coon Rapids, Beverly Christenson of Spicer, Linda (and Jerry) Phillips of Willmar; two brothers: Michael (and Kandice) Halvorson of New London, Steven Halvorson (and special friend Marium) of Willmar.

She was preceded in death by her son: Todd in 1968, and two brothers.
