GLENWOOD -- Mathilda "Tillie" Swanson, 88, of Glenwood died Friday at Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood.
The service will be at 2 p.m. today at the Hoplin Funeral Home in Glenwood. Burial will be in the Glenwood city cemetery.
Visitation will be two hours prior to the service.
She was born Nov. 23, 1917, on the family farm near Eureka, S.D., to Fred and Lydia (Jacober) Swanson. They moved to McLaughlin, S.D., when she was a child. She graduated from McLaughlin High School. She worked as a waitress in Selby, S.D., and as a payroll secretary for road construction in New England, N.D. Later she moved to Bismarck, N.D., where she graduated from Cristy Beauty School. She started her own beauty shop in Bismarck. After selling her salon she moved to Omaha, Neb., and worked at the Omaha Motel and Restaurant.

On Jan. 2, 1943, she married Earl Swanson. They lived in St. Paul. After he joined the U.S. Navy, they lived in San Diego and San Francisco. After the service they moved to Glenwood and purchased Inlet Resort on Lake Minnewaska. She sold the resort after his death in 1978. She moved to Pelican Lake Estates. She was a member of the Pelican Lake Sportsman's Club, an elected official for the city of Long Beach, officer of the Degree of Honor Insurance Co. and a member of the Glenwood United Parish.
She is survived by her children, Barbara (and Gary) Holmgren, of Beaverton, Ore., Craig Swanson of Glenwood, Gary (and Lois) Swanson of Glenwood; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Emil (and Irene) Jundt of Black Hawk, S.D.; and a sister, Anne Merkel of McLaughlin.
She was preceded in death by her husband, four brothers, and three sisters.
