HECTOR -- Melvin Emerson VanderVoort, 89, of Hector died Thursday at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.
The service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Hector. Burial will be at the United Methodist Church of Hope Cemetery in Osceola Township, Renville County.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Hughes Funeral Home in Hector and for one hour prior to the service Monday at the church. Arrangements are with the Hughes Funeral Home in Hector.
He was born on March 6, 1918, in Bijou Hills, S.D., to Albert and Trina (Timmer) VanderVoort. He grew up in South Dakota where he attended rural school.

He married Georgianna Turgeon on June 17, 1939, in Chamberlain, S.D. They moved to a farm north of Hector in 1941. They farmed and he also worked for Henry Nickel for several years. They retired from farming in 1985. A few years ago they moved to Prairie View in Hector.
He was a member of the Osceola Church of Hope. Then he was a member of Hector United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife; children: Donald VanderVoort, Donavon (and Susan) VanderVoort, and William (and Nancy) VanderVoort all of Hector; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and sisters: Dorothy Heil of Osakis, Dolores Broderius of Montana, and Frances (and Frank) Johnson of Hector.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, Martin, three brothers, and three sisters.
