Midwest police step up seat belt enforcement

Police agencies in Minnesota will be stepping up their enforcement of the state's seat belt law and other traffic safety laws this weekend in an effort to save lives.

Police agencies in Minnesota will be stepping up their enforcement of the state's seat belt law and other traffic safety laws this weekend in an effort to save lives.

The "Click It or Ticket" effort will take place from Thursday through Sunday, as many people travel for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Law enforcement in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio are undertaking similar efforts.

According to a release from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 1,120 people traveling in passenger vehicles died in motor vehicle crashes during the 2008 Thanksgiving weekend. In the crashes were seat belt use was recorded, more than half of those killed were not wearing seat belts.
