CARLTON - Relatives say a family of five from Kentucky killed in an Illinois flood Saturday was driving to the northeast Minnesota town of Carlton to visit family when their vehicle was swept away by floodwaters.
Erin and Adam Schutt and their children Logan, Robbyn and Chad died after their car was swept away by floodwaters near Patoka, Illinois, about 60 miles east of St. Louis. The family was driving on a rural road and attempting to cross a low-water crossing, but a dip in the road may have concealed the true depth of the water.
Erin Schutt, whose maiden name was Nynas, attended Cloquet High School and lived in Cloquet most of her life, her brother, Corey Nynas, told WDIO-TV in Duluth. Erin moved to Elkton, Kentucky, after meeting Adam Schutt seven years ago.
Corey Nynas said two of the children, 13-year-old Robbyn and 10-year-old Chad, were Erin’s, while 13-year-old Logan was Adam’s son.
Authorities reported that one of the family members called 911 from the submerged vehicle at about 7:30 p.m. Saturday; firefighters and two dive teams responded. WSIL-TV in Illinois reported that a firefighter initially was able to talk to the family, but rescuers could not immediately reach the vehicle. By the time rescue crews were able to reach the vehicle, the people inside had drowned.
