RED WING, Minn. (AP) -- A logger was found Sunday afternoon in a wooded, swampy area of Red Wing, 16 hours after his wife called authorities saying that he had failed to return home.

Darrel Gusa, 60, of Kellogg, was ``walking, talking, conscious, but obviously injured' when he stumbled into rescuers around 3 p.m., Police Chief Tim Sletten said. His logging equipment was nearby.

Gusa was taken to Fairview Red Wing Medical Center for treatment for what appeared to be a head injury, then was transferred to St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, where he was reported in critical condition Sunday night.

About 100 people helped with the search, including members of the Red Wing police and fire departments, the Minnesota State Patrol and the Goodhue County Sheriff's Office, plus many volunteers.

Gusa had been logging in the Cannon River Bottoms, a marshy area surrounded by the Cannon, Vermillion and Mississippi rivers.

``It is starting to snow here,' Sletten said. ``Thank God he came out when he did.'
