MnDOT conducting controlled burn along Highway 23 near Spicer this month

SPICER -- The Minnesota Department of Transportation will perform a con-trolled burn of wetlands along state Highway 23 near Spicer sometime within the next two weeks.

According to a news release, the department will conduct the prescribed burn near the junction of Highway 23 and Kandiyohi County Road 127 at a time yet to be set based on weather and wind conditions.

The controlled burn will not delay traffic on Highway 23 because MnDOT will choose a burn date where the wind blows away from the state highway. MnDOT will notify affected property owners the day of the prescribed burn.

According to MnDOT, prescribed burning is a procedure used to promote the growth and seed production of native prairie species and to reduce the growth of undesirable species. The affected wetlands were created about five years ago as part of the Highway 23 four-lane project between Willmar and New London.
