WILLMAR - The Minnesota Department of Transportation says the detour for the resurfacing project on U.S. Highway 12 near the Willmar Bypass was removed Wednesday night as the road opened to allow traffic through the work zone.
Work continues on the project as crews excavate and reconstruct the road, add a right turn lane at Seventh Street Southwest and make accessibility improvements from Sixth Street Southeast to Lakeland Drive.
Stage 2 of the project goes into effect today when state Highway 23 ramps on the south side of the project close to traffic. Motorists will follow a signed detour on Kandiyohi County Road 9 to Willmar Avenue.
MnDOT urges motorists to slow down and always drive with caution in work zones.
The project is scheduled to be completed by mid-November, weather permitting.
Judy Jacobs, public affairs coordinator at the MnDOT District 8 office in Willmar, said MnDOT thanks local residents, business owners, commuters and others who may have been affected by the detour.
“We appreciate your support and cooperation as we work to enhance a safe, efficient and effective transportation system and ensure that the transportation system with continue to serve the state for many years,’’ Jacobs said.
