Monte approves Highway 7 agreement
MONTEVIDEO -- City Council members in Montevideo approved an agreement with the Minnesota Department of Transportation for work associated with the planned upgrade to Minnesota Highway 7 in the city this year.
The city will be responsible for an estimated $364,253 worth of street work and $291,113 worth of utility work associated with the project, according to information provided to council members at their meeting Monday.
The state will be awarding a bid this year to rebuild a one-mile portion of the roadway on the city's east side.
City Council members also approved a resolution declaring the city's intent to issue bonds for its street and utility work for the coming year, said City Manager Steve Jones. The resolution states that the city could issue up to $1.5 million in bonds.

MONTEVIDEO -- Underground fiber optics linking the Chippewa County Courthouse and Sheriff's Department will need to be moved when Minnesota Highway 7 is rebuilt this summer in Montevideo.
The Chippewa County Board of Commissioners discussed possible options for replacing the fiber optic link at its meeting Tuesday, according to Jon Clausen, auditor/treasurer.
The commissioners will be seeking bids for two possible options. The county will look at the possibility of replacing the fiber-optic link with a wireless system. It will also consider the possibility of a new, underground fiber-optic link.
Either option could cost in the range of $50,000, based on initial estimates. The underground cable links the courthouse and sheriff's department computer and telephone systems.
In other business, the commissioners received an update on cleanup efforts at Wegdahl from Scott Williams, land and resource management director. The county highway department used its equipment to move trees and other debris on county-owned property in the community. The materials were piled together and must still be disposed of.
