Montevideo clinic project to get under way

MONTEVIDEO -- Excavation work will get under way this fall for the construction of a new medical clinic to serve the Chippewa County-Montevideo Hospital.

Hospital administrator Mark Paulson reported that both the Chippewa County Board of Commissioners and Montevideo City Council at their meetings this week awarded a package of bids for the project.

The bids totaled $1,335,860, which is well below the engineer's estimate for the work.

The clinic is the first phase of an estimated $37.2 million project to redevelop the hospital.

The three-phase project calls for replacing the existing 31-year-old hospital with a larger facility.

The project would expand the health care facilities from 45,000 square feet to 112,000 square feet on the current campus.

Getting work under way on the clinic is critical to the project. The new clinic will be built on the opposite side of the hospital from its current location. The new clinic will serve as the main entrance to medical services for clients seeking care in either the hospital or clinic.

Paulson said the plans call for ground preparation work to get under way this fall to allow for construction and completion of the clinic in 2007. The city and county are currently in the process of developing a financing plan for the overall project.
