Montevideo council gives final OK to Wal-Mart project

MONTEVIDEO -- City Council members in Montevideo gave final approval to a development agreement that will allow Wal-Mart to move ahead with construction of a new Supercenter.

MONTEVIDEO -- City Council members in Montevideo gave final approval to a development agreement that will allow Wal-Mart to move ahead with construction of a new Supercenter.

The action at Monday's City Council meeting means that construction on the store will likely get under way this spring.

The company has indicated an interest in having the new store in operation within a year of the start of construction, said Montevideo City Manager Steve Jones.

Council members had approved a site plan for the project in December. Wal-Mart plans to replace its 64,701-square-foot store opened in 1993 with a Supercenter enclosing 153,395 square feet. It will be constructed on property owned by Bradley Moseng and Betty Lewison along Minnesota Highway 7 east of the Firestone Store.

In other business, council members discussed a proposal to name a street in memory of Arnie Anderson, who died Jan. 26 at age 86. The retired brigadier general with the Minnesota Army National Guard and longtime local business owner is remembered for a lifetime of involvement in civic affairs.

Council members indicated their interest in seeing a street named in his memory, but did not commit to a proposal to name a street in a new proposed subdivision. Jones said council members indicated they would like some time before making a decision on which street to name.
