WILLMAR -- Baseball can be a game of inches, bad bounces and heartaches.
The American Legion Division II final had all that and more as defending champion Jordan tipped Montevideo in extra innings 12-10 Sunday at Bill Taunton Stadium.
Inches: Montevideo catcher Mike Hinde hit a ball to the deepest part of Baker Field in the bottom of the seventh inning that looked like it would end the game, but Jeremy Heitkamp chased it down to make a Willie Mays-like catch with his back to the plate.
Bounces: Each team got two runs on bad-hop singles off Baker Field's sun-baked infield. Jordan third baseman Michael Dabu had to leave the game in the third when Brady Johnson's hard grounder came up and struck him below the right eye.
Heartache: After trailing 4-0 after a half-inning of play, unheralded Montevideo stormed back to go up 9-4 in the bottom of the fourth, highlighted by Mike Tanhoff's two-run homer.

But Jordan worked its way back to tie it with three runs in the top of the seventh on one hit, and then got two-unearned runs in the top of the eighth when Steve Beckman's vicious liner coming out of the sun didn't stick in right fielder Mike Amborn's glove.
"It's a game of inches," said Hinde, who had three of his team's 16 hits. "But that's baseball."
No one gave Montevideo much chance of getting this far. They came in as the host team after losing District 7 to Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop.
"I think we surprised ourselves a little," said left fielder Tyler Kanten, who made several fine running catches. "After we won that first game, we said why not the next one?''
Ditching his fastball after one inning, Brady Johnson pitched into the fifth inning using off-speed pitches to keep the potent Jordan line-up off balance.
James Gallagher, Tanhoff and Hinde had three hits each and Jon Altena and John Schmit two each as the first five spots accounted for 13 hits alone.
Gallagher relieved Johnson with one out in the fifth and the bases loaded. He had control problems right from the start and would walk six though he allowed only two hits -- one of those a bad-hop single.
Johnson consoled Amborn after the game.

"I told him that we shouldn't have been in that situation to begin with," said Johnson. "I told him to keep his head up."
Both teams advance to the Midwest Region Thursday through Sunday in Viroqua, Wis.
Winning pitcher Steven Beckman, who was 6-for-13 hitting and also recorded a save, was named tournament Most Valuable Player.

Quarterfinals
Montevideo 3, Nashwauk-Keewatin 1
Jon Altena pitched a four-hitter and Montevideo's offense made the most out of five Nashwauk-Keewatin errors to advance to the championship game Saturday.
Altena dominated N-K batters, retiring 13-in-a-row in the middle innings. Montevideo's defense came through with inning-saving plays to hold N-K to just one run. In the fourth, center fielder Mike Tanhoff tracked down a deep drive with an over-the-shoulder catch to rob a sure double from Joe Martire. Later in the inning, first baseman Brady Johnson dove to his right to smother a hot shot from Chris Bonderson and threw to Altena covering the bag for the final out.
Montevideo ended the game by catching Matt Borgman trying to steal second base.
Offensively, Montevideo put the ball in play, then let N-K throw it away. Gallagher started the game with a single to center and took second on an errant pickoff throw. After moving to third on Tanhoff's sacrifice bunt, he scored on a wild pitch for a 1-0 lead.
In the third, Gallagher smacked a two-out double to center, took third on another wild pitch and scored on a series of three throwing errors. As Tanhoff stole second, the throw sailed into center field. The throw to third was wide, which allowed Tanhoff to score for a 3-1 lead.
Altena finished with six strikeouts and one walk.
