MONTEVIDEO -- An open house will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 4 at the Montevideo council chambers to describe plans to extend water and sewer to homes along Chippewa County Road 41 outside the city. Montevideo city council members set the date during their meeting on Monday, reported City Manager Steve Jones.
The council members are planning an orderly annexation of the area when the project gets under way next year. There are currently 18 residences there, but there is room for the possible development of perhaps two more residences in the future.
It is believed that about one-half of the residences are served by septic systems that are failing or not in compliance with county codes.
The city is proposing a project to extend the municipal water and sewer service to the area. A preliminary study includes a $618,000 estimated cost for the project.
Council members are planning to charge a buy-in fee of $7,500 per residence hooking up to the city system. The residents could hook up to the system when the construction is completed or elect to hook up at a later date.

Jones said the city has also asked Chippewa County to provide $100,000 toward the project to help abate its costs to the homeowners. The county is considering the proposal. If the county does not assist, the city would likely have to increase the proposed buy-in fee.
In other business, council members met with economic development director Scott Marquardt as they continued budget discussions.
They are looking at a possible overall 2.7 percent increase in the budget.
Council members also approved action to abate nuisance property issues at two addresses; award the low bid of $19,000 to Adams Motors of Montevideo for a Dodge Durango for the police department; and agreed to additional paving for the VFW Post #380 as part of the Southtown Plaza improvement project.
