MONTEVIDEO -- Sgt. Jared Winters, the Montevideo soldier injured Oct. 7 in Iraq, is receiving care at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. He arrived at Walter Reed Oct. 11.
Winters' parents Sue and Curtis Winters of Montevideo arrived the following day and are now helping with their son's recovery.
His mother reported in an e-mail that her son is progressing. He has undergone two surgeries to wash out shrapnel wounds. Winters was injured by a roadside bomb near Balad, Iraq. He was riding in a heavily armored Humvee, and his parents credit the armor with preventing more serious injuries. He suffered a fracture to his lower left leg and shrapnel wounds. He was initially airlifted for medical care in Iraq before being transferred to a hospital in Landstuhl, Germany.
He serves with the 29th Field Artillery, which is based in Fort Carson, Colo. The 1997 Montevideo High School graduate originally served with the Army National Guard before enlisting with the Army.
Cards and well wishes are welcome and should be sent to: Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Building 2 Attn: Sgt. Jared Winters, 6900 Georgia Avenue, NW., Washington, D.C. 20307.
