MONTEVIDEO -- Montevideo is one step closer to developing a transit parking facility and expanding public parking in the downtown with the acquisition of Block K on the north end of the commercial district.

City Council members acted at their meeting Monday to accept city ownership of Block K from the city's economic development agency. The agency had purchased property on the block and funded the removal of a building there.

Council members also approved action to repair a roof and install heating for a former auto repair business on the block. It will be converted for use to hold the city's transit bus and store property.

In other business Monday:

- Council members approved the reading of an ordinance aimed at eliminating junk vehicles from properties in the community. The ordinance would allow property owners to work on or repair only one inoperable vehicle on their property at any given time. The ordinance comes in response to complaints about junked vehicles being stored on properties in town.
