Morton, Fernholz are Willmar's top qualifiers in 2AA finals on Friday

ST. PETER -- Willmar Cardinals junior hurdler Shelby Morton qualified for the finals in both hurdle events in the girls division on the first day of the 2AA Track and Field Meet being held at Gustavus Adolphus College.

Morton's time of 16.76 placed her first in the 100 intermediates going into Friday's finals.

Brianna Fernholz had the fastest time in the 200 dash preliminaries with a 25.65.

Jordan Schalmo qualified in the 300 hurdles in 42.24, but hit a hurdle in the 110 highs and failed to advance, though his understudy, Steven Kluver, did make it in the ninth spot in 16.55.

Also advancing is Chrissy Boros, who finished third in the 100-dash preliminaries in 13.1. Zach Coquyt is ninth after the 400 preliminaries at 53.33.

Erin Sheehan and Sarah Hund both advance in the 800.

Earning points on the first day were Jackson Roberts in the shot put (45-4) for fourth place and also fifth in discus (134-0).

Brooke Feichtinger took fifth in pole vault in 9-6.

In the 3,200 run, Dominique Hudson took sixth in the 3200 (12:49.74) And Katie Heng eighth in 12:59.0. In the boys long race, Matt Weitzel finished fourth in 10:50.01.

The Willmar boys 4x800 team ran at 8:09.7 and just missed a return to state. They placed second to Delano (8:05). The girls 4x800 relay team took fifth in 10:02.
