PROCTOR, Minn. -- It’s one thing to drive drunk, but it’s another thing to drive a piece of construction equipment while drunk.

Dustin Lunde, 27, of Proctor, was arrested March 9, for driving a Caterpillar excavator on a Duluth sidewalk in the wee hours in the morning, the Minnesota State Patrol reported. His blood-alcohol level was reportedly more than twice the legal limit.

“For someone to drive something like that at 3 a.m. is definitely unusual,” said Lt. Eric Roeske, Minnesota State Patrol public information officer. “We are pleased we were able to catch him before he seriously injured himself or others,” Roeske said.

A trooper found Lunde in the excavator just west of downtown, shortly after 3:30 a.m. Sunday.

Lunde admitted to stealing the excavator, authorities said, and he was charged with theft of a motor vehicle, possession of stolen property and second-degree DWI.
