HOLLOWAY -- Signs installed this week to improve the safety at a highway intersection have been damaged by gunfire.
An electronic sign, the solar panel for the sign and a stationary sign at the intersection of U.S. Highway 12 and U.S. Highway 59 near Holloway in Swift County were damaged, according to a release from the Swift County Sheriff's Office.
"Signage improvements were recently made to the intersection and it is very disheartening that such an act would be committed," Sheriff Scott Mattison said in the news release on Friday.
The shooting caused thousands of dollars in damage, according to the release.
A couple from Louisburg died this week after a collision at that intersection, just a day before the Minnesota Department of Transportation was scheduled to install the new signs.

Fourteen empty 9 mm cartridge casings were recovered from the scene. The cartridges included Winchester, Federal and CCI brands, suggesting that they are from reloaded ammunition, according to the release.
