Half a dozen people were evacuated Friday morning when fire broke out in an apartment in downtown Willmar.

Marv Calvin, Willmar fire chief, said one person was taken to Rice Memorial Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Litchfield Avenue and Fourth Street were blocked off to traffic.

Firefighters from Kandiyohi, Pennock, Spicer and Benson helped Willmar fire crews battle the smoky blaze.

"The fire was isolated to one apartment. It did extend up into the ceiling," Calvin said.
