VERGAS -- Norman Ardell "Bud" Refsland, 82, of Vergas died Thursday at St. Mary's-Innovis Hospital in Detroit Lakes.

The service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Loon Lake near Vergas. Burial will be at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation is one hour prior to the service Monday at the church. Arrangements are by David-Donehower Funeral Home of Detroit Lakes.

He was born July 30, 1925, in Renville to George and Thea (Helgeson) Refsland. He was raised and educated near Sacred Heart. He served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1946 in Okinawa. He lived briefly in the Twin Cities. Then he returned to rural Sacred Heart.

He married Marvolyn Butenhoff on March 7, 1948, near Renville. They farmed near Danube until 1975. He then worked for the Southern Minnesota Sugar Beet Plant in Renville for several years. They moved to Lake Lida, near Vergas, where they operated Refsland's North Shore Resort from 1981 to 1994. They moved into Vergas in 1994.

He is survived by his wife; children: Bradly (and Rosemary) of Detroit Lakes, Steven (and Marilyn) of Carbondale, Colo., Gene of Glenwood, Colo., Dale (and Cheryl) of Park Rapids, Karen (and Mark) Neu of Pelican Rapids; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a sister: Marilyn (and Harry) Zimmer of Raymond.

He was preceded in death by a grandson and a brother.
