WOOD LAKE -- Norman Arthur Hinz, 86, of Belle Plaine, formerly of Wood Lake, died Sunday at the Lutheran Home in Belle Plaine.

The service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Wood Lake. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Visitation will be for two hours prior to the service at the church on Friday. Arrangements are with Redwood Valley Funeral Home in Redwood Falls.

He was born May 24, 1919, in Marshall to Arthur and Theresa (Podoll) Hinz. He attended parochial school at St. John's in Wood Lake and graduated from Wood Lake High School in 1938.

He married to Lillie Pederson on June 21, 1939. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on Dec. 13, 1944, and served until his honorable discharge Jan. 17, 1946. They farmed near Cottonwood, and then moved to Wood Lake. He retired in 1983. They wintered in Alamo, Texas, for 25 years. They moved to Belle Plaine in 2000.

He was a member of the Wood Lake Legion, the Granite Falls VFW, and was a trustee at St. John's Lutheran Church. He served as a conference delegate for his church for many years. He also served as a board member for the Wood Lake Shipping Association and Wood Lake Public School. He was on the Posen Township Board for many years.

He is survived by his wife; children: Gene (and Mary) Hinz of Nashwauk, Jerry Hinz of Monticello, Judy (and Arvid) Schwartz of Green Isle; nine grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and sisters: Grace Lutterman of Wood Lake, Ella Bundy of Richfield, and Ruth (and Leslie) Just of Detroit Lakes.

He was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law: Sharon Hinz; and one brother.
