WILLMAR -- A Willmar police officer was injured Wednesday at the Willmar Junior High School by two students after responding to a report of a fight.
The liaison officer for the Junior High, Michael Markkanen, was called to the east side of the school near the football field around 2:55 p.m. According to a news release from the Police Department, Markkanen was assaulted while conducting an interview.
A 13-year-old boy and 14-year-old girl attacked Markkanen. The girl allegedly became upset when Markkanen tried to interview the boy and attacked the officer.
According to the release, two Junior High staff members trying to aid Markkanen were also injured.
Injuries included bites, scratches and bruises.

The students were arrested on charges of fourth-degree assault -- a felony for adults. The two were held at Prairie Lakes Detention Center until their court appearances Thursday. Markkanen returned to work Thursday.
